With as much success as the New England Patriots have had over the last two decades, you’d think they’d have had more success in hitting on first round picks–but even dating back to the beginning for the franchise, they’ve actually have a fair amount of struggles. Some of their early struggles were due to drafting players in the AFL that decided to play in the NFL–only 2 of their first 6 1st round selections actually signed with the team. Only two Patriot first round picks have made it to the Hall of Fame (drafted in ’73 and ’76), and 24 of their 67 1st round picks (through 2019 season, 2020 draft) have made Pro Bowls in their careers.
Granted, in recent years, the Patriots have typically been selecting in the bottom quarter of the draft–they haven’t had a top 10 pick since 2008, and 2001 before that–but their confidence in drafting late in the first has reached the point that in 2009, 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2020, they decided to completely trade out of the round–compiling additional later round picks, with the hope that quantity would make up for quality.
So how many of those Patriot first round picks can you name in 10 minutes?
