In 1982, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome opened, a state of the art indoor facility that would be home to the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, and countless monster truck rallies.

To the East, the Green Bay Packers were coming off of the 15th season since their last Super Bowl, a stretch that saw them win one division, and not all that many games. With another NFC Central opponent also playing indoors (Detroit, which opened the Pontiac Silverdome in 1975), the Packers were desperate for an advantage–and considered the unthinkable:

Putting a roof over Lambeau Field.

It doesn’t sound like the plan ever had a lot of traction–the feasibility study that was completed was actually picked up at a garage sale by a Packer fan from Texas for $5 in 2013. The plan would have cost about $10 million for the roof and $5-6 million for heating & ventilation($38 to $40 million in 2015 dollars), and would have allowed the facility to draw additional revenue through “trade and travel shows, exhibitions, concerts, rodeos, horse shows, etc.”

And probably a hell of a lot of monster truck rallies.
